Real-Time Signal Tracker In Chennai Traffic Lights? No, It’s A CGI Video

Claim
A signal tracker in Chennai displays the photographs of people violating traffic rules on a board attached to traffic lights.

Fact
The video has been created using CGI tools, and does not show an actual board attached to a traffic light in Chennai. 

A twelve-second-long-video purportedly showing a board attached to a traffic light, displaying the photograph of a person who jumped a red light signal is being widely shared on social media platforms. Those sharing the video claimed it shows a “signal tracker in Chennai,” calling it “great innovation.” Newschecker found that the viral footage is a CGI concept video, and does not show an actual board attached to a traffic light. 

Multiple social media users shared the video claiming, “If you break the Traffic Rule in Chennai your face will be projected with the fine…”

Fact Check/Verification

A keyword search for “Signal tracker,” and “Chennai” on Google did not yield any credible news reports on the alleged “new innovation.” However, it led us to an Instagram post by @riggedindian, dated May 2, 2022. It carried the viral footage with the caption, “Red signal tracker in chennai, if this comes then we can have a great traffic system. This is a VFX video not real #chennaibeach #chennai #signal #trafficsignal #blendervfx”

The Instagram account described itself as “VFX artists/Animators” that “make unique content for all fandoms.”

We skimmed through their account and found several CGI concept videos such as this, this and this

Furthermore, we found that the viral footage was again posted on the Instagram account of @riggedindian on June 8, 2023. The caption again clarified, “This video is a concept video…This is a cgi concept video.” 

The account also shared a video showing the “Vfx breakdown” of the viral footage on June 16, 2023, with the caption, “Vfx breakdown of our latest viral sensation. Hope you liked our idea 💡. Signal tracker in chennai. #chennai #chennaitraffic #traffic #signal #cgi.” From the video, it is understood that the board displaying a photograph of a traffic rule defaulter has been digitally added to a video of a regular traffic light.

Conclusion

We can thus conclude that the viral footage of a signal tracker in Chennai is a concept video created by using CGI and does not show an actual innovation.
