A video showing a large ‘shelf cloud’ formation passing over residential buildings is being shared on social media, with users claiming that the video shows recent weather conditions in Gurugram, Haryana. The claim comes in the wake of heavy rain in northern India, leaving major cities such as Delhi and Gurugram inundated with floods.
The text on the video reads: “2nd September 2025. Gurugram, Haryana, Delhi NCR.”
However, an investigation by Newschecker found that the video dates back to 2021 and is from Ukraine, not India, as claimed.
The video was shared on Instagram with hashtags like #gurgaon #monsoon #heavyrainfall #flood. This post has garnered more than 50,000 views at the time of writing. Archive link can be seen here.
In the comments section, several users have fallen for the post, calling it ‘Doomsday for Gurugram.’
Fact Check/ Verification
A reverse image search of one of the keyframes from the video led us to several Youtube posts from August 2021 featuring the same video.
One such post by Youtube channel ‘Meteord’, was uploaded on August 18, 2021, with the title “Terrifying shelf cloud in Lviv, Ukraine.” As per the video description, this cloud formation on August 17 surprised several residents in the city of Lviv, where the storm struck intensely.
We also found a longer version of the video on a Youtube channel ‘ZAXID.NET’ uploaded on August 17, 2021.
The description of the reads, “On the morning of Tuesday, August 17, a rain cloud moved over Lviv, causing a strong thunderstorm (Translated from Russian).”
The channel quoted weather forecaster Natalka Didenko clarifying that the cloud formation was probably a subspecies of cumulonimbus clouds– a “thunder collar.”
Cumulonimbus clouds occur often in Ukraine, but the phenomenon of a “thunder collar” is a rarity. The video was attributed to a local resident names Dmytro Shvets.
Ukrainian media outlet TCH also reported that the giant storm cloud approached the Lviv city from the direction of Naukova Street in the morning.
Also, we were able to trace Dmytro Shvets’s Facebook post showing the same visuals in better quality.
Conclusion
It is evidently clear that 2021 video from Ukraine was falsely linked to the recent adverse weather conditions in Gurugram, Haryana.
