Video From China Shared As Train On Haridwar-Karnaprayag Railway Route

Video found to be from China.

An over one-minute-long video showing an aerial view of a train passing through mountainous terrain overlooking a river has gone viral on social media platforms. Those sharing the video claimed it shows the train route from Haridwar to Karnaprayag in Uttarakhand. Newschecker, however, found the claim to be untrue.

Multiple X and Facebook users shared the video purportedly showing, “train passing through various tunnels.. Haridwar to Karnaprayag.” The text overlay in the video reads, “Rishikesh to Karnaprayag.”

Fact Check/Verification

On carefully analysing the viral video, we found it to be a compilation of two different clips from the same location.

We then looked up the keyframes of the footage on Google lens with keyword “train” which led us to a Facebook post by People’s Daily, China, dated October 16, 2024. Carrying visuals similar to the one seen in the viral clip, it stated, “Tunnel after tunnel, a moving train passes through the mountainous landscape, unfolding a beautiful sight in Cili County, central China’s Hunan Province.”

After comparing the keyframes of the viral clip with those of the Facebook video, we could conclude that both the visuals show the same train route.

Subsequent investigation led us to a Facebook post by Xi’s Moments, China state-controlled media, dated October 31, 2024. Carrying a footage of the same train route, it stated, “Nestled in Cili county, #Hunan Province, the railway is nothing short of an engineering marvel as it winds through majestic mountains. This incredible route promises an unforgettable journey filled with breathtaking views at every turn, showcasing the stunning beauty of China’s landscapes. “

We found several social media posts carrying videos of trains passing through the same location, and identifying it to be from Cili County, China.

Further, we were able to spot the location seen in the viral video on Google Earth view in China.

Moreover, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently said that the first phase of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project will be completed only by the end of 2026.

Conclusion

Hence, a video from China has been falsely shared to show the train passing through Haridwar to Karnaprayag railway route.
