More than a week since 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner, Vignesh Puthur, from Kerala’s Malappuram, had a dream IPL debut for Mumbai Indians against the Chennai Super Kings, a video has been doing the rounds of social media, claiming to show a woman, allegedly his mother, dancing with joy while watching her son in action on TV.

Fact Check

Newschecker first ran a keyword search for “Vignesh Puthur mother dancing”, which did not throw up any credible news reports, raising our doubts.

We then ran a keyword search for “Vignesh Puthur parents”, which led us to this Sportstar profile article, dated March 24, 2025, sharing a photo of Vignesh’s parents, Sunil Kumar and Bindu.  We also came across this OneIndia Malayalam and Reporter Live interviews with Vignesh’s parents, dated March 24, 2025, where you can clearly see that the mother is not the same woman seen in the viral video.

Screengrabs of the viral video, which confirm that the woman is not Vignesh Puthur’s mother who has been interviewed by multiple news channels.

Conclusion

The woman seen in a viral video dancing with joy while watching Mumbai Indians bowler Vignesh Puthur’s performance is not his mother, the viral claim is false.
