Claim:

Watch! Brutality of Delhi police on women

Verification:

A video with a Bengali caption claiming atrocities of Delhi police is doing the rounds on the various social media platforms. In the video, three women were seated on the floor of the police station, each holding their kids. When the police officer gestures at them to get up, the women start crawling away, pleading and crying. All of a sudden the officer starts beating one of the women and grabs her hair forcing her to stand up.

We found that several users on social media had shared the viral video on their respective handles

The message in Bengali reads, “দিল্লি পুলিশের বর্বরতা দেখুন, দিল্লির এই ভিডিও ছরিয়ে দিন” (English: Watch the brutality of Delhi police. See this video and share as much as you can)

Fact check:

Using reverse-image search on the Google search engine, we found a postdated article of English news website NDTV. The article was published on May 9, 2019. The report had snippets the same as in the viral video. According to the report, “This horrifying incident took place in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior, where the police officer reportedly assaulted a woman with a stick ruthlessly. The incident which took place in the police station was recorded on camera.

The Gwalior police claimed that the video is two years old and they were unaware of its existence until it was spotted on social media. They have also said the officer in question is away on poll duty and will be questioned upon his return.

Furthermore, we broke down the video into multiple key frames and did a reverse image search on Yandex. We found one of the key frames which led us to ‘Catch News’ report which carried the same snippets of the viral video .The headline of the report reads , “Madhya Pradesh: Cop caught on camera ruthlessly thrashing woman with child in Gwalior police station” and was published on May 9 , 2019.

During our search, we also found a media report by ‘IBTimes India’ and ‘IBC24’ which carried out the same report of the incident that reportedly happened in Gwalior.

Conclusion:

The video being shared showing the supposed brutality of the Delhi Police is actually that of an officer from the Gwalior Police. The claim is false.
