Several social media users are sharing a photo, purportedly of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with the chief of Hindenburg Research, Nathan Anderson. The claim comes close on the heels of a report by Hindenburg Research, accusing the Adani Group of “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud”.
The archived version of the tweets can be seen here and here.
Fact check
Newschecker first looked up the Hindenburg Research’s website, where its bio stated that the company, “founded by Nate Anderson, CFA, CAIA, specialises in forensic financial research”.
We looked through Anderson’s Twitter profile, multiple news reports and interviews, and understood that the man in the viral photo is not Anderson.
We then ran a reverse image search, which led us to this NDTV report, dated August 23, 2018, titled ”Rahul Gandhi Meets German Minister, Discusses Kerala Floods”. According to the article, then Congress President Rahul Gandhi met Germany’s Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Niels Annen and discussed politics, floods in Kerala, GST and jobs. “Mr Gandhi visited Germany as a part of his diaspora outreach programme ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections,” read the article, attaching a tweet by Annen.
We ran a relevant keyword search and came across multiple news reports of the meeting, seen here and here. The Congress had also shared a tweet of the meeting on August 22, 2018.
Conclusion
Man in the 2018 photo with Rahul Gandhi is German politician Niels Annen and not the chief of Hindenburg Research, Nate Anderson.
Result: False
