As the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah lash Chennai and its neighbouring districts with incessant rainfall, a video showing severe flooding on the roads, where several parked cars can be seen partially submerged, is going viral on social media, with users claiming it depicts the current situation in Tamil Nadu’s capital.

A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led Newschecker to a Facebook post by Kais Kalim, dated September 25, 2025. It featured a shorter version of the same video, identifying it to be from Kolkata.

Additionally, on closely analysing the viral video, we identified a vehicle with the licence plate WB, indicating West Bengal.
Further, we spotted multiple hoardings such as “Royal Indian Restaurant”, ” Golden Meat shop,” “Reliance Optician” among others. Taking clues from the same, we were able to locate the site seen in the viral footage in Kolkata.

Newschecker was not independently able to confirm when the footage was originally recorded, but our verification confirms that the location is not Chennai and predates the current bout of incessant rainfall in Tamil Nadu. Hence, the viral video claiming to show extensive flooding in Chennai amid incessant rain following Cyclone Ditwah is false.
