Communal misinformation reigned over the social media platforms this week. While visuals from a  Mangaluru Mosque were shared with false claims to allege that it showed a Kerala temple that was converted to a Mosque, an old piece of misinformation surrounding JNU was revived yet again on WhatsApp. From a photograph of India’s first cabinet participating in a luncheon falsely shared as the first Iftar party of independent India, to a video of a gun wielding girl from UP shared with misleading claim, here are our top 5 fact checks from this week:

A video of a police woman recovering a gun while frisking a female is going viral on social media, claiming to show a female teacher from Uttar Pradesh. According to the investigation conducted by Newschecker, the female caught with a country made pistol in Mainpuri is neither Muslim, nor a school teacher. Read more here

A video showing an old structure complete with an adjoining pond, built in the style of architecture typical to Kerala, is being shared widely on social media alleging that an ancient Hindu temple in the state has been converted into a mosque. Elephant Attacks Father-Son Duo Over Attempt To Feed It Meat? No, Viral Claim Is Misleading

A shocking video that shows an elephant reacting in rage, coiling its trunk around a toddler and attempting to fling the child after he offers the animal something to eat, is going viral on social media.  Users who posted the video claimed that the animal retaliated after the “Muslim fellow tried to give meat to Elephant.” Newschecker has found the claim to be untrue.
