Fact Check
At least 270 people were killed after Air India flight AI171 crashed into the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad shortly after taking off for London on Thursday (June 12, 2025). Since the tragic news broke, social media platforms went rife with unverified visuals being linked to the recent crash in Gujarat.
Several such videos also claimed to show the “final moments” before the crash purportedly shot inside the ill-fated Air India aircraft. Newschecker investigated two such videos and found them to be unrelated to the recent mishap in Ahmedabad.
Video shows a passenger panicking as the Air India aircraft experiences turbulence before the crash.

On carefully analysing the viral clip, we found the seats and carpet seen in the aircraft were different in colour from the usual cabin interiors of an Air India plane. Further, we also spotted “How Time Flies” printed on the seat covers seen in the viral clip. Notably, the phrase is used by Indigo airlines.
We then looked up the keyframes of the viral footage on Google Lens which led us to an Instagram post by @hemlata_chakraborty, dated May 22, 2022. It featured the same clip, confirming that it is old footage, unconnected to the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad.
Other social media posts from May 2025 also featured the same video.
Hence, we find that the video dates back to at least May 2025 and is not related to the recent aircraft crash in Gujarat.

On carefully analysing the clip, we heard a passenger saying, “…this is the condition of Air India Express.” Further, we also noticed the logo of Air India Express on the seat covers. The aircraft also had blue-coloured interiors as opposed to the standard red colour-scheme of Air India.
Notably, Air India Express is a Tata enterprise and a subsidiary of Air India. Its fleet comprises 110 aircraft, including 70 Boeing 737s and 40 Airbus A320s. The Air India AI 171 flight that crashed in Ahmedabad was a Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft.
Moreover, Government PIB Fact Check also flagged the viral claim and termed it “fake.”
We were not able to independently verify other details about the video.

Hence, we find that the viral videos claiming to show the situation inside the Air India aircraft before the fatal crash of June 12, 2025 are false.
