Hindu woman murdered in Bangladesh’s Barisal, body wrapped in polythene with her hands tied up.
The woman is not dead, and both she and her husband are Muslims
Social media users widely circulated an image purportedly depicting a woman’s body wrapped in polythene with her hands bound, claiming she was a Hindu woman murdered and later found by police in the Talukder Market area of Barisal, Bangladesh.
Many users shared the claim on both Facebook and Twitter, following which Newschecker fact checked the viral claim, which revealed that the woman was neither dead, nor Hindu.
A reverse image search of the viral image led us to a news article, published on June 29, 2025, on a Bangladeshi news outlet called Khaborer Kotha with the headline “Women with hands and feet tied with polythene rescued in Barisal.” The image in the report was similar to the viral one.
As per the report, on June 29, 2025, Bangladesh police rescued a woman from Barisal-Bhola highway. She was attacked with acid and was found with her hands and feet tied up. Delwar Hossain, officer of Barisal Port Police Station said that she was admitted at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Another Bangladeshi media Samakal reported, “The rescued woman has been identified as Maria Begum (23). She is three months pregnant. It is alleged that her husband’s ex-wife’s relatives have tortured her to abort the baby.”
Maria Begum also told reporters at the hospital that she had married a businessman from Bhola, named Mashiur Rahman a year ago. On the day of the incident, she was first kidnapped by her husband’s ex-wife’s brothers. They took her to a forest and tortured her. They tied her arms and legs, wrapped her in polythene, and abandoned her there.
Two other Bangladeshi media Ajker Patrika and Bangladesh Pratidin also published reports carrying similar information.
Therefore, the identity of the rescued woman and her husband confirms that the woman is not a Hindu, but a Muslim.
