At least 18 people were killed and multiple others injured in a stampede that broke out at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, 2025. The tragedy was reportedly triggered by a sudden surge in passengers waiting to board the trains to Prayagraj, where Mahakumbh is currently underway.

As the opposition demands Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s resignation, a video allegedly showing him breaking down while interacting with the press has surfaced online, with users linking it to the New Delhi Railway Station stampede. 

In the 10-second-long-video, Vaishnaw is purportedly heard saying, “…members who are missing…their family members reach them as soon as possible. This is our responsibility…”

Fact Check/Verification

A keyword search for “Ashwini Vaishnaw” and “emotional” on Google led us to a YouTube video by ANI, dated June 5, 2023. Carrying the same footage of Vaishnaw’s interaction with media, it stated, “After visiting and taking stock of the rail traffic restoration at the incident spot on June 4, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw got emotional. While speaking to the media persons he said that the goal is to make sure missing persons’ family members are found as soon as possible and hence, their responsibility is not over yet.”

The footage was also shared on YouTube by India Today in June 2023 to show Vaishnaw getting emotional while speaking about the Odisha train accident. Multiple other outlets such as this, this and this also reported on the same.

The 2023 Odisha train accident was one of the deadliest train accidents in India, and saw a triple-train collision involving the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train. The accident took place in June 2023 in Odisha’s Balasore and claimed nearly 300 lives, and left over 1000 people injured. The video actually shows Vaishnaw breaking down while interacting with the media over the same tragedy. 

Reacting to the recent New Delhi Railway Station stampede, Vaishnaw wrote on X, “Deeply saddened by the unfortunate stampede that occurred at New Delhi Railway Station. My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The entire team is working to assist all those who have been affected by this tragic incident.”

Conclusion

Hence, we found that an old video of Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw getting emotional over the 2023 Odisha train accident has been falsely linked to the recent New Delhi Railway Station stampede.
