Fact Check
Photo shows an Indian fighter jet on fire after an attack by the Pakistan military in response to India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’.
The post can be seen here.
We looked up the viral image on Google Lens which yielded a report by DNA, dated September 2, 2024. It featured the same image showing an aircraft on fire, and stated, “A fighter aircraft, MiG-29 fighter jet, of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in Barmer district of Rajasthan on Monday night, police said. The incident happened after the IAF MiG-29 encountered a critical technical snag during a routine night training mission in the Barmer sector.”
An X post by the news agency IANS, dated September 2, 2024 carried a video of the incident showing visuals identical to the viral photo. “During a routine night training mission in the Barmer sector, an IAF MiG-29 encountered a critical technical snag, forcing the pilot to eject. The pilot is safe and no loss of life or property was reported. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered: IAF,” the X post corroborated.
Multiple outlets such as this, this and this carried the same image in their reports on the IAF Mig-29 aircraft crash in Barmer in September 2024.
Thus, we find that an old photo has been shared to falsely show an Indian fighter jet on fire after Pakistan’s attack.
