Viral Visual Showing Dire State Of ‘Hindu Child In Bangladesh’ Is Actually From Gaza

A photograph of a visibly bewildered and helpless child is being circulated on social media platforms amid widespread turmoil in Bangladesh, with users claiming it to show the plight of Hindus in the crisis hit country. Multiple others also shared a longer video of the same child in an identical state linking to the current situation in Bangladesh. Newschecker, however, found the claim to be untrue. 

The visuals are being widely shared on X, Facebook and YouTube claiming to show a Hindu child in Bangladesh.

Fact Check/Verification

A reverse image search on the viral visual led us to a video by CBS News, dated July 20, 2024, featuring the same child. “Video captures aftermath of Israeli airstrike in Gaza,” its caption stated.

Arabic language website bnfsj.net also featured an image of the child in an article about the “daily massacres of the occupation in the Gaza Strip.”

The viral image was also featured in a Facebook post by Aljazeera Mubasher – its watermark can be seen in the viral video. “Fear and terror of a child sitting alone after being cut. An Israeli targeted a centre to accommodate the displaced in the #Abu_Araban school belonging to Onrowa in Al-Nusairat camp (translated from Arabic via Google),” the post from July, 2024 stated.

Further, the full video was uploaded on the outlet’s official X account, stating, “Fear and panic of a child sitting alone after an Israeli bombardment targeted a shelter for displaced people in the #Abu_Urayban school affiliated with UNRWA in the Nuseirat camp.”

Hence, visuals from Gaza have been shared to show the dire condition of a Hindu child in Bangladesh.
