From reviving an old video of Yogi Adityanath distributing money, to another video of Akhilesh Yadav being allegedly ‘confronted’ by a villager for only building mosques, to the ongoing ‘Hijab Vs Saffron Shawl’ protests in Karnataka that saw a spate of fake claims springing up, here are the top five fact checks by Newschecker from this past week.

Old Video Of Yogi Adityanath Revived With False Claim Amid UP Elections


An old video of Yogi Adityanath is going viral claiming to show that the incumbent UP CM distributed ‘cash for votes’ ahead of the polls. However, the claim is untrue. The video is from 2012 and shows Adityanath providing financial assistance to people whose crops were destroyed because of fire. Read more here.

Tricolour Replaced With A Saffron Flag In Shivamogga? No, Viral Claim Is Misleading

 A video is going viral on social media with a claim that India’s national flag was replaced with a saffron flag at a government college in Shivamogga. However, Newschecker found that the claim is misleading. The pole was empty when the boy hoisted the flag. Read more here

Viral Video Of Water Being Thrown On Women Wearing Hijab Is An Old Video From Sri Lanka

A video is going viral on social media with a claim that Muslim women are being tortured across the country for wearing hijab. We found that the video of water being thrown at hijab-wearing women is not from India, but rather a video of senior students at Eastern University of Sri Lanka ragging juniors, including hijab-wearing women. A viral post, that claims that Coconut water, being isotonic and sterile, is being used as a substitute for IV bags in hospitals in third world countries is viral on Facebook.
