No, Sniffer Dog Was Not Killed In Recent J&K Encounter

BJP MP Vinay Tendulkar tweeted two pictures claiming that a sniffer dog was killed during one of the twin encounters in Shopian and Baramulla districts of J&K on Friday.  

Appreciating the army, Vinay’s tweet an army sniffer dog was “martyred as terrorists fired on the dog” in the latest encounter.

Fact check/ Verification

We started by conducting a reverse image search of the pictures shared by BJP MP Vinayak Tendulkar and found that these pictures are from an encounter that took place in Baramulla on July 30, 2022, in which a sniffer dog was killed.

One such report by Wion news published on July 31, 2022, carrying the same photograph claimed that a sniffer dog was killed during an encounter in Baramulla district of J&K after he was sent to locate the militants.

“Sniffer dog Axel was killed during an anti-terror operation in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir in which one terrorist was killed. The two-year-old Army dog was hit by bullets after police said the dog was sent to locate terrorists”,

We found several reports carrying the same picture claiming that the sniffer dog was killed during an encounter in Baramulla that took place two months before on July 30, 2022.

A twitter search showed that several users shared the same picture two months ago claiming that the sniffer dog was killed during the encounter in Baramulla district of J&K.

We also found several video reports of a wreath laying ceremony in the memory of the killed dog. 

A video by Daily Excelsior News on their official Youtube channel shows the Army paying tributes to the dog. 

‘A wreath lying ceremony for Axel’, an Indian Army dog was held who lost his life in a counter-terrorist operation in the Kashmir valley on Saturday during a building clearance operation there. Senior army officers paid tributes”, Excelsior reported.

 The official Twitter page of Kashmir police too posted information about the encounter and confirmed the killing of the two terrorist but did not mention any dog.

The media reporting too does not mention any dog having been killed in the latest encounter.

Hindustan times reported that “A joint team of Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police launch a cordon and search operation where two militants were killed after an encounter broke out between security forces and militants, at Yedipora village, Pattan area, in Baramulla on Friday”, the report stated.

Conclusion

The picture shared by BJP MP Vinay Tendulkar is old and from a different encounter incident. It is not connected to the recent encounter in Baramulla that took place on September 30.
