As multiple northern states witness incessant rainfall, a video of gushing water dragging vehicles across a flooded street between rows of buildings has surfaced on social media platforms. Facebook user Sapphireindia shared the footage with the caption, “pray for punjab 🙏 2023 #punjab #india #love #flood….,” insinuating that the video shows the situation in Punjab.

Incessant rainfall over the past few days has caused  massive flooding in several areas of the state, resulting in damage to property, agriculture and loss of lives. At least eight people have died and three are missing in the state due to heavy rainfall. Reportedly, 9,500 persons have been evacuated and nearly 4,000 shifted to relief camps so far as the state battles flooding and heavy downpour.

Fact Check/Verification

A Google lens search on the keyframes of the footage led us to a YouTube Shorts by News18 Assam/Northeast, dated July 10, 2023. It carried the same video to depict the situation in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan.

Taking a clue, we looked up keywords “solan,” “floods” and “cars” on Google which yielded a report by NDTV, dated July 11, 2023 . Carrying the video, the report stated, “Swelled-up streams of murky brown water dragged along several cars with it in a Himachal Pradesh district, showed a video, capturing the devastating scenes witnessed across north India on account of heavy rain and flooding. The latest incident was reported from Parwanoo, a tourist hotspot in the Solan district of the state.” 

A report by ABP News, dated July 10, 2023, also carried snippets from the video to show the situation in Himachal’s Solan amid incessant rainfall.

Conclusion

A video of gushing water sweeping multiple vehicles across flooded streets from Himachal Pradesh’s Solan has been shared out of context.
