नेहरू के दादा गंगाधर का जन्म ग़यासुद्दीन गाज़ी के नाम से एक सुन्नी मुसलमान के रूप में हुआ था, लेकिन ब्रिटिश चंगुल से बचने के लिए उन्होंने अपना नाम बदलकर एक हिंदू गंगा धर रख लिया। वह स्वतंत्रता सेनानी मोतीलाल नेहरू के पिता थे और भारत के पहले प्रधानमंत्री जवाहर लाल के दादा।
Investigation:
हमने इस विषय पर काफी सारे भ्रामक तथ्य होने की वजह से इसकी पड़ताल शुरू की। अपनी पड़ताल में हमें गल्फ न्यूज़ में प्रकाशित एक लेख के माध्यम से यह पता चला कि जवाहर लाल नेहरू के परदादा राज कौल ने नहर के किनारे के वाशिंदे होने के कारण नेहरू उपनाम अपना लिया। गल्फ न्यूज़ के इसी लेख में यह भी कहा गया है कि प्रारम्भ में उनका उपनाम ‘कौल-नेहरू’ था जिसे बाद में उन्होंने केवल नेहरू कर दिया।
कुछ और पुख्ता सबूत की तलाश में हमने अपनी पड़ताल जारी रखी। नेहरू-गाँधी परिवार से जुड़े काफी सारे कीवर्ड्स के इस्तेमाल पर एक और दावा हमारे सामने आया कि मुग़ल शासक फ़र्रुख़ सियर ने राज कौल को अपना उपनाम बदलने की सलाह दी थी जिसके बाद उन्होने नेहरू उपनाम अपनाया था। यह दावा Daily Sikh Updates नामक वेबसाइट के एक लेख में किया गया है।
काफी छानबीन के बाद भी हमें राज कौल के द्वारा नेहरू उपनाम अपनाने के पीछे क्या कारण थे इसकी पुष्टि के लिए कोई ठोस सबूत नहीं मिला। यद्यपि अनेको लेखों में वर्णित तथ्यों एवं इतिहासकारों के पुष्टि से यह बात साफ़ हो जाती है की पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरू के पूर्वज मुस्लिम नहीं थे।
